Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez is perhaps Mexico’s most famous and revered athlete. His 1993 championship fight knockout of American Greg Haugen with the largest attendance (132,000) of any boxing match in history in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca 1993 and his loss to East Los Angeles’ son of immigrants Olympic Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya in 1996 aroused fascinating and deeply nationalistic feelings in Mexican and American fans alike.
