The historical and political relationship between the United States and Cuba has been complicated and contentious, but baseball has always been a common passion. “Old-School” baseball fans will remember Tiant, Cuellar, Canseco, Pasqual, Perez, Oliva, Campanaris, and Minoso, and revel in current stars like Cespedes, Puig and Abreu. But Cubans playing the game of baseball go back almost a century and a half! And, one of sports great urban myths still abounds after a half of a century – a great “alternative history” speculation…a supposed “try-out” in Havana in 1951 by none other than a law student turned eventual revolutionary, Fidel Castro.
