Doc and radio host Annie Esposito will discuss the the Brazilian soccer/football superstar and social activist Socrates (2/19/1954 – 12/4/2011) and his legacy. A complex and multi-talented individual, Socrates held a medical degree, studied philosophy, wrote political commentary and led a movement in Brazil called Corinthian democracy where his club soccer team modeled democratic principles in a country with a history of authoritarian and anti-democratic rule. And, his approach to playing the game of soccer emphasized its potential as an art-form – “joga bonito.” Many historians believe that the 1982 Brazilian team which Socrates captained epitomized the highest creative and aesthetic ideals in team sport. Tune in and check it out!
