Doc will be talking with Phil in the first hour about his upcoming book review for the New Books Network on Brian Harker’s Louis Armstrong’s Hot 5 and Hot 7 Recordings. Harker’s book highlights six representative songs from Louis’ Hot 5 and Hot 7 recordings made between 1926-1928 and illuminates how Armstrong’s novelty, musical solo narratives, chord progressions, sweet and hot admixtures and technical virtuosity consolidated much of the disparate elements in jazz. Armstrong’s genius, energy, innovation, creative courage and commercial savvy and opportunism influenced the subsequent development of jazz for the rest of the century.
