Nicaragua’s Alexis Arguello’s was one of boxing’s great and beloved warriors of the 1970′s and 1980′s.  A champion in the featherweight, jr. lightweight and lightweight divisions, he never lost a championship title defense.  But later in life, politics proved to be more treacherous and unpredictable than the fight game.

  1. Rosenzweig, Phil says:

I was at the Forum, Nov 1974, when Arguello took the title from Olivares. Also on the card: Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora, champions all. Best night of boxing I ever saw. Came down from UCSB with my Phi Sig brothers Larry, Howard, and Israel. Great night!
